A successful photography session is all about preparation, relaxation, and enjoying the moment. As both a photographer in the Dallas area and a mom to two young kids, I understand that preparing for a photo session can be stressful and overwhelming. That’s why I make it my mission to make the entire process as easy and stress-free as possible. However, there are steps you can take to make it more enjoyable. Here are my top tips for a smooth and stress-free photography session to ensure beautiful and memorable images.
Plan Ahead
Scheduling your session in advance is key to securing the best timing for your needs. Whether you’re looking for the perfect sunset for a maternity shoot or a serene morning light for a family session, booking early ensures you get the exact date you want before my calendar fills up. Planning ahead also gives you ample time to coordinate outfits, gather props, and prepare your family for the session. This is also essential if you are planning a maternity or newborn shoot, as you are only pregnant for a fleeting amount of time, and your snuggly newborn will seemingly grow before your eyes! To capture images in the right time frame it is essential to plan!
Choose the Right Outfits
Selecting the right outfits is crucial for a cohesive look, however, it doesn’t have to be stressful. My client closet offers a variety of options for moms and kids, so you don’t have to worry about finding the perfect look. Everything in my client closet goes together and features soft, flowing fabrics and neutral colors that complement each other and the natural surroundings and won’t be distracting.
If you are selecting your own outfits, just be sure to avoid bold patterns or bright colors that might draw attention away from your faces. Instead, look for those soft and neutral colors. Comfort is also important – make sure everyone feels good in what they’re wearing.
Bring Essential Items
Pack a bag with essential items such as snacks, water, and maybe a few bribes if you have younger kids. Keeping everyone hydrated and energized can make a big difference in maintaining happy moods throughout the session. Besides, snacks usually make everything better! You can also bring any comfort items needed such as a familiar toy or stuffed animal that can help keep young children happy and engaged. For newborn sessions, bring special props or blankets that have meaning to you and that you want included in the images.
Relax and Enjoy the Moment
One of the most important aspects of a smooth, stress-free session is staying relaxed and enjoying the moment. Trust me to guide you through the process and capture beautiful, candid moments. Focus on having fun with your family and let me handle the rest. When you’re relaxed and enjoying yourselves, it reflects in the photos, creating natural and heartfelt images. Remember, the goal is to capture your family’s unique dynamic and love for each other.
Embrace the Unexpected
Sometimes, things don’t go exactly as planned, and that’s okay! Whether it’s a sudden change in weather or a fussy child, embracing the unexpected can lead to some of the most genuine and memorable photos. I am experienced in adapting to any situation to ensure great results. Sometimes those candid moments turn out to be my favorite images from a session! Flexibility and a positive attitude can turn potential stressors into wonderful, unplanned opportunities.
After the Session
Once your session is over, the experience doesn’t end there. I will carefully cull through the images, discarding any multiples or shots where someone is blinking, and then edit them in my unique style. About two weeks after your session, you’ll get an email with a link to your beautifully edited gallery of photos to choose from. There, you can view your photos and make selections for your album or prints. We also offer album design and printing services to create lasting keepsakes. This way, you can relive the joy of your session every time you look at your photos.
By following these tips, you can help ensure a smooth, stress-free, and enjoyable photography session that will leave you with beautiful images and lasting memories that you’ll cherish for years to come.
