Mini Sessions vs. Full sessions | Choosing the Right Photography Experience for Your Family

When it comes to scheduling a family photoshoot, one of the key decisions you’ll need to make is whether to opt for a mini session or a full session. Both options offer unique benefits, and understanding the pros and cons of each can help you determine which option is best for your family. Regardless of which one you choose, you are sure to walk away with stunning images and family memories that you can look back on! To help you choose which one is best for your family, here is a look at mini sessions vs. full sessions.

Mini Sessions vs. Full sessions

Benefits of Mini Sessions

01. Time Efficiency

There are a few major benefits to mini sessions that make them the ideal choice for many families. The first benefit is time efficiency, as mini sessions are shorter in duration, typically ranging from 15 to 30 minutes. Therefore, they are an excellent choice for families with young children or busy schedules. If you’re looking to capture a few quick and timeless shots without a huge time investment, a mini session might be the perfect solution.

02. Cost-Effective

Another reason mini sessions are popular is that they are often more budget-friendly compared to full sessions. Since they are shorter sessions with a lower price point, they provide an affordable option for families.

03. Focus on Key Shots

Mini sessions are designed to focus on capturing a few key poses or moments. While they may not include as many detail shots or pose variations, they are ideal for families who have specific shots in mind or are looking for a quick and efficient photoshoot experience.

Mini sessions are great for those families who know what they want and understand upfront that there will be limited time, due to the shorter duration of mini sessions. It is important to note that a limited timeframe could be harder if you have a larger family or a variety of specific poses you’d like to include.

Benefits of Full Sessions

01. Variety

While mini sessions offer plenty of advantages, full sessions offer their own set of benefits. One of those advantages is a more extensive time frame. Full sessions typically range from 60 – 90 minutes or longer. This allows for a wider range of poses, locations, and outfit changes, resulting in a diverse collection of photos that capture various aspects of your family’s personality and dynamics.

02. Personalized Experience

With more time available, photographers have the opportunity to get to know your family on a deeper level and customize the photoshoot to your preferences. Whether you have a specific vision in mind or need guidance on poses and locations, a full session allows for a more personalized and tailored experience. For instance, full sessions provide time for including your family dog, or capturing special moments, like your family snuggled up on a blanket reading your favorite book. Capturing such scenes can be hard to fit in a mini session.

03. Relaxed Atmosphere

Another benefit to full sessions is the longer sessions create a more relaxed and unhurried atmosphere. This can be especially beneficial for families with young children. Sometimes kids can take longer to warm up or need break, which is totally fine. During a full session there is less pressure and children feel more comfortable and at ease, resulting in natural interactions and candid moments that truly capture the essence of your family.  While full sessions typically come with a higher price tag compared to mini sessions, they offer greater value in terms of time and customization. I personally prefer full sessions more, especially with younger kiddos! I love capturing those candid, genuine moments between a family. Seeing kiddos run around, laughing, and just being kids is my favorite – and the images that come from these moments are priceless.

Ultimately, the choice between a mini session and a full session depends on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. If you’re looking for an efficient and affordable option that focuses on key shots, a mini session may be the ideal choice. However, if you value variety, personalization, and a relaxed atmosphere, a full session may better suit your family’s needs. Whichever option you choose, the most important thing is to select a photographer who understands your vision and can capture the unique beauty and connection of your family.
