In-Home vs. Studio Newborn Sessions: Which One Is Right for You?

As a Dallas newborn photographer, I often get asked about the differences between in-home newborn sessions and studio newborn sessions. Both options have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, and it ultimately comes down to personal preference and what will be most beneficial to you. Both options will provide timeless images of your sweet newborn and this special season of life!  To help you decide which session might be best for you, here are a few pros of in-home vs. studio newborn sessions.

In-Home Newborn Lifestyle Sessions

If you’re looking for a more relaxed and natural approach to newborn photography, then an in-home lifestyle session might be the way to go. Let’s also acknowledge that bringing a baby home, whether it is your first or fourth, is a huge transition! That transition affects not only you, but your entire family, siblings included. Sometimes an in-home session is a better fit for the sheer simplicity and comfortability. Here are a few reasons why people choose to do an in-home session:

01. Convenience

One of the biggest advantages of an in-home session is that you don’t have to leave your home with your newborn during those first few weeks. This can be a relief for new parents who may be feeling overwhelmed or exhausted. There is no stress surrounding the session. You’re not worrying about packing the diaper bag and forgetting something. Instead, everything you need is within reach. Most in-home sessions also have a bit slower, and more relaxed pace.

02. Comfort

Many parents want to capture their newborn in the comfort of their own home. This can be especially important if you have other siblings who may be more comfortable in their own environment. Siblings can play with their toys while I focus my attention on your sweet newborn, then I can easily add them back into the frame when it is time! In-home sessions also allow you to include furry family members in the photos too! In addition, you, mama, have the luxury of snuggling up with your baby in the spots of your home that bring you joy, adding a layer of meaning to your photos telling your unique story!

03. Showcasing Your Home

I know most parents put a lot of time and energy into decorating the nursery. I absolutely love seeing all the different themes and decor items and capturing all the nursery details of each in-home newborn session. No two nurseries are the same! If you’ve worked hard on designing and decorating your baby’s nursery, then an in-home session can be a great way to showcase and document this special room in your photos.

Studio Newborn Sessions

When you first hear the term “studio session” many imagine posed babies in baskets and buckets. However, my North Dallas studio sessions aren’t heavy on posing in the traditional way you might be imagining. I do capture some images with baby on my beanbag against a white backdrop for a clean, bright and timeless look that will never go out of style. I always aim for timeless images that focus on the tiny features and sweetness of your newborn. Now that we’ve cleared that up, here are a few reasons why you might choose a studio session:

01. Clean and Timeless Look

My photographic style focus on light and airy, timeless images. Most likely, if I am taking your newborn’s photos, that is your style too!  A studio session might be a better option if your home lighting isn’t the best. If you have dark paint in the main rooms with little to no access to natural light, it will definitely be harder to achieve my light and airy style. In that case, a studio session might be best to capture the ideal lighting and backdrop for your photos.

02. No Cleaning Required

Let’s face it, cleaning your house after having a baby may be the last thing on your mind. With a studio session, you don’t have to worry about cleaning or tidying up your home. Please know that with all my in-home newborn sessions, I do not expect anyone to make their home spotless, but I often find that for some, just the thought of a photographer coming into your home can provoke anxiety. That is what I want to AVOID! I want the entire newborn photography experience to be stress-free and enjoyable. If you know an in-home session will stress you out, worrying about cleaning up spaces, then schedule a studio session to relieve any potential stressors!

03. Classic Images Showcasing your Newborn

If you love the look of clean and simple photos that focus on your baby, showcasing each and every feature, as well as your growing family, then a studio session is a perfect choice. A studio session provides a controlled environment allowing me to focus on capturing the beauty of your newborn. Using my classic, light, and timeless style, I will highlight the unique features of your baby, such as tiny toes and fingers, soft hair, and delicate eyelashes. This is particularly important during the newborn stage, as babies grow and change all too quickly.

Whether you decide to do an in-home or a studio newborn session, one thing is certain, I will take the best care of your sweet newborn and capture images of this milestone moment in your family! Both options have their benefits and will result in beautiful and meaningful photos of your new family that you’ll cherish for years to come. I will always help each of my families decide on the option that suits their family best!
