Welcoming one newborn into the world is a magical, life-changing experience! However, welcoming twins means double the snuggles, double the love, and (yes!) double the personality. I recently had the sweetest baby-led twin newborn session in my studio, and it perfectly showcased why I love my simple, baby-led approach to newborn photography.
If you’ve never heard of that before, a baby-led photography approach simply means that the baby, or in this case, babies, run the show. Every session flows based on their unique rhythms and needs, not by a rigid list of poses or strict timelines. That means we stop for feedings, rock to sleep if needed, and let your little ones move, stretch, and settle in naturally. The result? Relaxed parents, happy babies, and beautiful, organic images that reflect the true essence of those early days.
Baby-Led Twin Newborn Session
While every newborn session requires flexibility and patience, twin sessions call for an extra dose of it! With two little ones, we’re working with two sets of sleepy cues, two feeding schedules, and two very distinct personalities.
For this session, we had one baby who was the calm, sleepy type and another who was just a little more awake. And honestly, I love that! One twin was happiest on their belly, while the other preferred to be on their back, and that was totally okay. Instead of trying to fit them into identical poses, we simply followed their lead.
There were moments when one baby needed to be soothed or fed, so we focused on capturing solo portraits of the other. When both were content and snuggled up, we photographed those quiet, dreamy twin moments side by side. This relaxed approach ensured that we captured the sweetest, most natural moments, whether they were peacefully sleeping or stretching and wiggling in their own unique ways.
Why I Use a Baby-Led Approach
Sessions like these are such a great reminder of why I believe so strongly in a baby-led approach. Babies aren’t tiny dolls. They’re brand new little humans with preferences, needs, and feelings. Honoring those needs, rather than trying to rush or force anything, makes the whole experience more enjoyable for everyone, but especially the babies, as the baby’s well-being is my top priority! Remaining flexible is key to all sessions with newborns, as well as older children.
When you remain calm and flexible, following their lead, you get the most heartwarming, memorable photos. These usually come from the candid in-between moments. In this session, the way one twin rested their tiny hand or head on their sibling, or how one stretched out while the other could barely keep their eyes open created the best memories.
I had so much fun capturing this sweet twin duo. Watching their connection, even this early on, and seeing their already different personalities was just the best. These photos will always be a reminder of just how special this season of life is, and now this sweet family can cherish these precious memories forever with these photos.
If you’re expecting and considering a newborn session in those early weeks, just know that it doesn’t have to be stressful or overly posed. With a baby-led approach, we’ll let your newborn guide the way, and we’ll still get timeless, beautiful images you’ll treasure forever. Reach out today if you’re ready to book your newborn session or have any questions about the process. I’d love to chat and document these first precious days of your little one.
