As much as I love capturing beautiful outdoor portraits, Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate. One minute, it’s sunshine and blue skies, and the next, the clouds roll in, and we’re dealing with a surprise downpour. However, here’s the good news—unexpected weather doesn’t have to ruin your photo session! In fact, some of my favorite images have come from sessions where we had to pivot last minute.
For example, on my way to a gorgeous Frisco, TX maternity session, it started raining. Instead of canceling, my clients were incredibly flexible, and we quickly switched locations. We found a stunning covered space at Frisco Square featuring elegant archways that gave the session a timeless, romantic feel—without anyone getting soaked! The results were just as beautiful as if we had been in the original location, and their pups still got to join in!
So, if you’re worried about the forecast for your upcoming session, don’t stress! Here’s a few tips on how to handle unexpected weather during photo sessions and how we can still create gorgeous images—rain or shine.
How To Handle Unexpected Weather During Photo Sessions
Remain Flexible = Less Stress
Let’s be real—trying to predict the weather is nearly impossible, especially in Texas. Instead of worrying about the forecast, we’ll always have a Plan B ready to go. Knowing we have a backup plan eliminates the stress of “what if”. Whether we move to a covered outdoor space, switch to my studio or other indoor session, or reschedule, we’ll make sure you still get beautiful photos!
Indoor Locations Can Be Just as Stunning
If the rain forces us to move inside, don’t worry—indoor sessions can be just as magical! My studio is designed with soft, natural lighting, making it the perfect space for warm and timeless portraits. If you love a more personal touch, we could also do an in-home lifestyle session, capturing cozy, intimate moments in the comfort of your own space.
There are also unique covered locations—porches, greenhouses, or even historic buildings—that can give us a gorgeous backdrop while still keeping an outdoor feel. No matter where we shoot, I’ll find the best lighting and angles to create beautiful images that reflect your story.
Rescheduling is Always an Option
If an indoor or covered option isn’t what you envisioned, we can absolutely reschedule for a sunnier day! My priority is making sure you LOVE your photos. If you had your heart set on a particular location or golden hour glow, we’ll work together to find a new date that works.
Embracing the Unexpected Creates Memorable Photos
Some of the most beautiful and unique images come from unexpected moments. A little mist or drizzle can create a dreamy, romantic feel. A couple dancing under an umbrella? YES, please! Kids splashing in puddles? Some of the most joyful, candid shots ever. Sometimes, the best photos (and memories!) come when we simply embrace what the day gives us.
Rain Won’t Stop Us!
While we can’t control the weather, we can control how we adapt to it. Whether our backup plan involves moving to an indoor session, finding a covered location, rescheduling, or going all-in and embracing the rain, I promise to still deliver beautiful, timeless photos. Before your session, we will discuss all of the options and decide ahead of time what our backup plan is should the weather not cooperate.
So if the forecast is looking questionable, don’t worry—I’ve got you covered (literally)! No matter what, we’ll make sure your session is a success, and you walk away with stunning images that you’ll treasure forever.
