When planning a photo session, timing matters just as much as location. While golden hour portraits are popular, there are certain spaces like open fields, meadows, and beautiful natural landscapes where golden hour is truly unmatched. During this short window of time right before sunset, the light is soft, warm, and flattering. This light creates the most gorgeous portraits and is why golden hour is the perfect time for outdoor photos, especially in places like Flower Mound, TX.
Here the tall grass and open fields allow the sun to drench the landscape. There is little shade, as there are no buildings or trees to block harsh light, which means midday sun can create strong shadows and cause squinting. That is definitely not what we want! However, a few hours later during golden hour, the sun is lower in the sky and provides warm afternoon light that wraps gently around, flattering everyone.
What to Expect with a Golden Hour Session
Golden hour portraits are similar to other outdoor sessions. The main difference is that these are specifically scheduled close to sunset. A quick google search will tell you the sunset time for the day in your location. After determining sunset time, I work backwards to determine what time is the best start time. We want to make sure there is plenty of time for arriving and getting set up, exploring the location, and capturing all the love and connection.
The light changes quickly during this time frame, so we do move through the session with purpose, but never skimp on photos. I always take the time to ensure we are getting all the desired photos. The payoff though is a gallery filled with warmth and dreamy images. Trusting the timing allows the location and your photos to truly shine.
Why Golden Hour Is the Perfect Time for Outdoor Photos
Golden hour light is especially beautiful for family and maternity sessions, giving images a soft, dreamy feel. For this stunning maternity session in Flower Mound, TX, the light was stunning. It wrapped around the couple as they walked hand-in-hand through the fields and as the glowing mama showed off her beautiful baby bump. The sunlight at this time is perfect for creating those light and airy images that are soft and warm, which is exactly the result here.
We ended the session by the water on the rocky beach just as the sun was about to set. Seeing the light just on the horizon created such a relaxed, romantic, and dreamy effect. These images are truly some of my favorites.
Golden hour portraits are about using light intentionally. Natural light is at its most beautiful and complementary during this time, especially in open fields and natural spaces. If you love soft light, light and airy images, and natural connection, golden hour is the perfect time to schedule your outdoor photography session.
