One of the biggest worries parents have about newborn photos is how siblings will do, and the truth is, they don’t need to do anything at all. In fact, some of my favorite newborn images happen when siblings are simply allowed to be themselves. Including siblings in newborn photos should be natural, not forced. The best way to do this, is to allow children to warm up to me a little, while also allowing them the freedom to be themselves.
Why I Love Including Siblings in Newborn Photos
Sibling photos capture the very beginning of a lifelong relationship. The curiosity, excitement, or quiet observation you see in these early days can’t be recreated later and those honest moments are often the ones families treasure most.
I believe in letting siblings show up exactly as they are. There’s no pressure to pose perfectly or interact a certain way. Whether they want to sit close, gently touch the baby, or just watch from nearby, it’s all welcome.
If they aren’t feeling like sitting still with their newborn sibling, we don’t force it. Instead, I encourage natural interactions. In this sweet Plano, TX newborn session, the older brother started out the session taking peeks at little brother sleeping in the crib. Eventually we captured those adorable sibling photos of them sitting together, but we waited until the timing was right. I keep those moments brief and natural to help everyone stay relaxed. Taking breaks and having a few snacks helps too!
Including Siblings: What to Expect
Including siblings in newborn photos will come with wiggles, giggles, and possibly big emotions, all of which are normal. Sessions include a mix of posed and candid moments, but remember not every image needs to be perfectly still to be beautiful. Even if your little one is playing with trucks on the floor next to us, they are still a part of the session, and often these images become instant favorites because they capture real-life moments. It freezes a chapter in your family’s story that you can look back on and re-live.
In this in-home newborn session, the older brother warmed up slowly. We made sure to encourage him, but not force him. He approached his baby brother on his terms, gently rubbing his head, patting him, or pointing to his nose. As we spent time in the nursery, we allowed him to just be. We captured photos of the sleeping newborn cradled in mom and dad’s arms, while he was allowed to roam about the room and interact on his terms. The result was the sweetest family photos, most adorable sibling photos, and candid moments of connection.
You don’t need to prepare your kids to behave a certain way. Just let them be. I’ll gently guide the rest and capture this season exactly as it is. Removing the pressure to perform or get that perfect photo and allowing everything to flow naturally results in the best images, and this newborn session is proof of that.
