We hit the beach for Linley’s cake smash session in North Dallas! This was such a fun and unique location idea for the summertime. Gillian, Linley’s mom, had a vision of her summer baby being at the beach for these. She wanted the theme to feel elegant and girly to celebrate her baby girl’s first birthday.

Celebrating First Birthdays with a Cake Smash Session

Turning one is a big milestone for your little one! They are coming into their own personality, and it really starts to shine through in a cake smash session. Celebrating your child’s first birthday with a cake smash gives them permission to have a little messy fun while allowing you to capture this stage in their life, because it doesn’t last long enough!

Linley’s Elegant Beach Themed Cake Smash

Linley is so sweet and mellow. She’s the youngest of five, so she’s definitely used to rolling with the punches! I’ve photographed her family before and had the honor of capturing her six-month session. I can’t believe how much Linley has grown and changed in just a few short months! It’s a sweet reminder of how important my job really is. It’s true what they say, “babies don’t keep!”

Linley didn’t love the cake when the “smash” part of the session began. This has been happening a lot lately with my little clients and it’s totally normal. She dove right in with a big bite and immediately got a rush of sugar! She did a little shake and made the cutest face! These are the reactions I love capturing during a cake smash session. Every babe is completely different from the last, and no two cake smashes are ever the same.

Linley didn’t know what to think about the sand either. It’s so funny and fascinating to see how your little one reacts to a new situation. She opted to stand up and cling to the chair for most of her session that wasn’t on a blanket. We let her lead the session and grabbed some adorable images of her!

Choosing the Theme of Your Cake Smash Session

One of the best parts of planning your little one’s cake smash session is choosing the theme! Think about a theme that really represents your little one and your family. Are they girly and sassy? Laid back and elegant? Wild and adventurous? Trust me, your little one definitely has a personality at this stage and it’s important to choose a theme that feels right for them.

Gillian wanted Linley’s session to be elegant but still relaxed, just like Linley! She picked out the cutest tulle and lace dresses with floral headbands to match! The props for the session were pretty minimal, letting the beach provide most of the beauty. We used a white chair, a crate with a few seashells, a simple blanket for props and let Linley be the star of the show!
