Being in the world of family photography means that I get the pleasure of capturing families as they grow along with other members of the family as they recommend me. It’s so fun to get to learn so much about each family I work with! I meet cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, you name it. I captured the DoRemus family in the fall and had sweet miss Aubree back in the studio for her first birthday cake smash. Just a few months ago, I had the opportunity to capture her cousin, Penelope Rose, during a newborn session. View Penelope Rose’s newborn session here.
Mirror Photos During First Birthday Session
Aubree’s mom brought in a mirror to mimic images taken of her older daughter during her session. It’s so sweet to watch a baby see their reflection and Aubree was no different! She wasn’t too sure about it, but we still got a few smiles.
Tips for Cake Smash Photos
We all want the perfect cake smash photo. The baby smiling from their first taste of sugar, cake on their hands and face, and the cutest cake to celebrate this special milestone. But let’s be honest, this isn’t how it always goes. The baby is tired, the sugar from the cake is too much and you may very well get more photos of a screaming baby at this point. But we take their lead and go with the flow to make sure you still get the adorable photos you wanted from your session.
If you have cake smash photos coming up, here’s two of my favorite tips for capturing the moment:
- Take the photos with the cake last. This way, if your baby doesn’t like it, or makes a mess of it, you’ll be ending with these images.
- Bring a food you know they like to stick on the cake or around it in case they aren’t interested in the cake itself. We used puffs for Aubree’s session!
